God sometimes you just don’t come through

Koenma is one of my favorite characters. I have a lot of feelings about him, especially concerning his relationship with Sensui. Sometimes I think that of the entire YYH cast, he’s the singularly most dynamic, drastically changed character by the end of the series.

Because while Yusuke, Hiei, and the others all develop significantly… at the end, they’re still themselves. They learn and change and mature, but at their cores they’re still the same basic people, and they sort of started out as blank slates anyway. Koenma on the other hand has this vast history, and he’s been himself for a very long time, and you really get a heavy sense of that. That he’s been here, and that he’s endured things. He starts out already experienced and with a strong sense of who he is and what he’s doing in the universe. The fact that even after all that, having had thousands of years to sort of solidify as a person, his experiences with Yusuke change him so intensely, is really amazing to me. Or at least, that they’re the last bit of straw to break the camel’s back, so to speak. You get a definite sense of him already sort of teetering at that precipice, even if it takes a while to come to light. It was a slow, slow build and Yusuke was not the beginning of it. Which lends so much weight to him as a character, makes him amazingly compelling. You feel that he existed long before this story began, and will be here long after it’s over. Maybe I just have a thing for characters who rebel against their shitty families. And for the morally ambiguous types. But then, as much as he might seem selfish and apathetic, he’s not so much ambiguous as operating on a much broader scale of morality. It’s clear that he does connect to and care about people on an individual level, and feels an enormous amount of responsibility for what happens to them. But he’s looking at the big picture, and he knows he doesn’t have the time (or the emotional endurance) to care about every sacrifice he has to make to keep the world spinning. He can’t afford to mourn people like Yusuke, because it’s up to him to carry everyone through in the event of his failure. And I think on some level Yusuke understands this, even if it’s subconsciously. And it’s one of the reasons why he has to make such noise about rejecting the sacrifices, say fuck the police, I’ll always care about the little people. I think it’s something he sort of has to do, because Koenma can’t. A way of forgiving him for it. Having an opposite reinforces who you are, what you stand for. Makes the things that define you stronger. It’s a way of communicating: I got this, and you do what you need to do. That emotional weight, that responsibility has to be split somehow. No one person could carry it—not even a god.
Aghh he’s so good! Well played, Mr. Togashi. Well played. :’)
